Biography

Sandy Bawuah was born in Ghana and raised in New Jersey. She studied sociology for 2 ½ years at the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, transferring to Fairleigh Dickenson University for her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She attended SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University for her Master of Science in Nursing. She completed her Nurse Residency program at Stony Brook University.

Earlier in her career, Sandy worked as a psychiatric nurse and then an O.R. nurse, working mainly with the neurosurgery team, at Stony Brook University. Before coming to Harbor View, she worked as a nurse practitioner at Hampton Medical Care, in Hampton Bays, NY.

Prior to becoming a nurse, Sandy worked with individuals with developmental disabilities as an aide. Here, she saw firsthand a clinic operated primarily by nurse practitioners and was amazed by their level of compassion and quality of the care they provided. This experience was the inspiration to pursue becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner. While working as an operating room nurse, witnessing health challenges – many of which are preventable – she was even more compelled to pursue her goal. “I strongly believe that many diseases and deaths can be prevented through proper health management, patient education and early detection.” As a Family Nurse Practitioner she believes she can make a difference in people’s lives by improving their overall quality of life.
