Migraine & Headache Awareness

By Mather Neurology

Mather Neurology doctors use the results of a full neurological exam and imaging tests to stop headaches. They can then create a treatment plan that best suits your needs, with the goal of reducing the severity and frequency of headaches. Mather Neurology doctors will help diagnose and treat your headaches.

Your treatment strategy depends on what type of headache is causing your pain. Here are a few headache types that you will be tested for:

Tension headaches: Tension headaches are the most common, affecting upwards of 75% of all headache sufferers. Most people describe a tension headache as a constant dull, achy feeling either on one side or both sides of the head, often described as a feeling of a tight band or dull ache around the head or behind the eyes.

Cluster headaches: Cluster headaches, which occur in cyclical patterns or clusters, are one of the most painful types of headache. A cluster headache commonly awakens you in the middle of the night with intense pain in or around one eye on one side of your head.

Sinus headaches: Sinus headaches are headaches that feel like you have an infection in your sinuses (sinusitis). You may feel pressure around your eyes, cheeks and forehead, and perhaps your head throbs.

Migraine headaches: A migraine is a neurological disorder involving nerve pathways and brain chemicals. Dilation and constriction of blood vessels in the head are the primary source of migraine pain. Genes and environmental factors play an important role. Migraines are often initiated or "triggered" by specific compounds or situations such as environment, stress, hormones, and certain foods.
