Diabetes & Heart Disease

People who have diabetes are at higher risk for heart disease then those without diabetes. The higher a person's blood sugar level is, the higher his or her risk is.  Compared with people who don't have diabetes, people who have diabetes not only have higher risk for heart disease but may develop it at a younger age and have more severe cases.

Just like smoking, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol, it's a very serious and dangerous. People who have diabetes have the same risk of heart attack and dying from heart disease as people who already have had heart attacks.

Diabetes further raises the risk of heart disease when combined with other risk factors.   When other conditions such as overweight and obesity and metabolic syndrome are combined with diabetes it causes harmful physical changes to the heart.

If you have diabetes, you can lower your risk.

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Taking medicines as prescribed
  • Physical activity can lower your blood pressure,
  • Controlled blood sugar and blood pressure
  • Weight control
  • Reduce stress
