When most hear Cardiology there first thought is pacemakers, open heart surgery or some procedure which may include a long recovery time. However, cardiology is not always invasive or scary. During the past 20 years, major progresses have been made in diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Specifically Nuclear cardiology and Echocardiography use a noninvasive studies which provide your cardiologist unique information to better manage your care.
Three Village Cardiology is accreditation by Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories.
Nuclear cardiology also referred to as Cardiac Nuclear Medicine and Nuclear Imaging, is a Sub-Specialty of Cardiology. Nuclear cardiology uses noninvasive methods to evaluate the pumping function of the heart. Typically small amounts of radioactive element or radiotracers, is injected, swallowed or inhaled into the body. This element then moves through the body and gives off an energy that can only be seen on a special imaging camera. These images will provide your cardiologist unique information to better manage your care.
Common types of nuclear methods;
Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI or SPECT) is a stress test for the detection of abnormal hearts structure, function and blood flow, aiding in the management of heart disease.
Radionuclide angiography (RNA or MUGA) are studies to assess for damage and to evaluate the efficiency of blood being pumped from the heart chambers.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) a type of scan which can measure how blood flows through the heart and if there has been any damage from a heart attack.
Echocardiography is a noninvasive study which uses an ultrasound to analyze the movement of the heart, often referred to as an echo. Echocardiography can be seen as two-dimensional, three-dimensional, or Doppler ultrasound to create images of the heart, each provide an individual feedback to the physician. This type of study has become widely used in the diagnosis, manage, and follow-up patients with any suspected or known heart diseases. It can provide an abundance of information, including the size and shape of the heart, how it pumps, and pinpoint any tissue damage.
Exercise Stress Test a common test to help doctors assess blood flow through arteries during exercise, usually walking, at different speeds and for numerous lengths of time on a treadmill. Also called exercise test, stress test, nuclear stress test, or treadmill test.
