Vascular Surgery

Vascular Associates of Long Island provides you with the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease in the most up to date and compassionate manner. Our doctors specialize in carotid disease, aneurysms, venous disease, dialysis access, stroke prevention, treatment of hypertension, lower extremity vascular disease, limb salvage, surgery for diabetic ulcers, and treatment of varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for the eradication of varicose and spider veins. Medication injected directly into the vein causes inflammation (irritation) of the vein. This inflammation over time induces scarring and fibrosis or thrombosis (clotting) of the injected vein which leads to the shutting down of that vein. Learn more about varicose vein injection sclerotherapy.

A full range of non-invasive tests are available at our noninvasive vascular laboratory, including tests for: peripheral arterial disease of the lower and upper extremities (PAD), abdominal vascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, deep venous thrombosis (DVT), aortic aneurysms, chronic venous disease and other specialized examinations.

The noninvasive vascular laboratory is one of the key components of Vascular Associates. Noninvasive testing, as the name implies, allows patients to be examined using Doppler Ultrasound techniques free of the risks and discomforts of injections and/or other invasive maneuvers. These tests allow diagnosis of almost all known or suspected vascular disorders and testing can often determine the severity of the problems and the need for its treatment.

A full range of noninvasive tests is available at our noninvasive vascular laboratory including tests for:

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) - blockages in the circulation to the arms or legs due to atherosclerosis or other diseases, which may threaten the limbs.

  • Noninvasive arterial exams of the legs or arms (physiologic testing) is performed for assessment of aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms and alsop arterial system testing including renal artery stenosis
  • Duplex ultrasound scan of the extremity arteries
  • Arterial testing; duplex is performed for assessment of aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms
  • Exercise testing for claudication (leg pain with walking)
  • Mesenteric arterial system testing including renal artery stenosis
  • Cerebrovascular testing for the carotid and vertebral arteries for stroke
  • Superficial temporal arteries testing for temporal arteritis

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) - blood clots in the veins that could migrate to the lungs. Scan offered;

  • Venous duplex scan of the arms or legs

Aortic aneurysms - a ballooning of the major artery that can cause fatal rupture. Scans offered;

  • Aortic duplex scan
  • Duplex scan of peripheral arteries for aneurysms

Chronic venous disease - varicose veins and other disorders that cause leg swelling and leg ulcers. Scan offered;

  • Duplex scan of the venous valves
  • Testing is performed in the deep, superficial and perforating veins.

Other specialized examinations:

  • Evaluation for dialysis access
  • Evaluation of dialysis access grafts and fistulas
  • Vein "mapping" for peripheral vascular or coronary bypass
  • Fistula duplex
  • PVR (pulse volume recording) with exercise

The vascular laboratory is accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL).

Complete listing of noninvasive vascular laboratory tests offered are:

  • Carotid duplex
  • Aortic duplex
  • Bilateral venous duplex R/O reflux (upper and lower extremity)
  • Bilateral venous duplex R/O DVT (upper and lower extremity)
  • Vein mapping (upper and lower extremity)
  • IVC/Iliac duplex
  • Renal artery duplex
